Impurities will always lower the melting point of a pure solid, regardless of the melting point of the impurity. It is an extenstion of the colligative property of a solution, which states the freezing point of a solution (melting of a solid) containing an impurity is lower than that of the pure substance. The amount of depression is based on the concentration of the impurity, and the freezing point depression constant.
