My hubby and I are trying to find the perfect place for us to live, so we can start planning for our move in 3 years. We LOVE the water. We don't want to go to the west coast. Lakes are great too. It would be best to be by a military installation, as well. (I know... lots of criteria. That's why we are stumped!)

If Michigan weren't in such tough shape economically, I'd say move to Troy. It was voted 5th safest city in America. Of course, Michigan has the Great Lakes, so that resolves that question; it's not landlocked, rather, it's a peninsula. The military bases, eh, I'm sure you could find them but I have no idea on that.

The flip side of the bad economy is that if you can land a solid job (usually takes being with a firm that is not based on automotive and gets business by other means), then you can get way more house for your money than any other place in America. Gas prices are also the lowest in the country here. But you won't get the "big city" experience here, unless you're willing to go to Detroit, which is like a lot of Midwestern cities, very derelict.

The suburbs are, however, very wealthy and quite beautiful, especially Oakland and Washtenaw counties.

There is plenty of hope of settling down. It all depends on what you consider settled. A career can be quite rewarding and you can have a nice family and see the world. It could be a great experience for the kids.

Virginia Beach,VA.
Population: 438,400

An up-and-coming military town, it is prospering thanks to an influx of tech companies. Homes are affordable here, with most going for just over $200,000.

It's got 38 miles of waterfront.
