I would say definitely NOT a beagle. they aren't really the pampered princess type of dog. they have a distinctive hound howl, and will roam if they get loose. (they are sweet and great in the right hands though!) they also have a lot of energy. dachunds from what i've seen are sweet little dogs. they might bark, but so do all dogs. the few i've met had energy but were also very sweet and cuddly. they don't appear to shed much or slobber either. pick a few breeds you are interested in and check out websites about them. there are some sites that can recommend breeds based on a questionaire you fill out!

I have a lab and I love him to pieces, but I think a lab would be too big, energetic and destructive for what you want in a dog. And some labs do bark. And they live for rolling around in mud and jumping in rivers, they clean up easy, but they'd rather be dirty :)

Beagles also bark and howl a lot, they are hunting dogs and very energetic, they might not be a great choice for you.

It sounds like you want a larger toy breed. Something bred to be a companion dog. My personal favorite is the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. They are small, sweet, affectionate and submissive to a fault, but still enjoy play and walks. The downside is that they are hard to find and expensive. You also have to be very selective if you buy from a breeder, this dog has more than it's fair share of genetic diseases. You should be financially secure enough to deal with any veterinary issues that come up. There are lots of wonder small breed dogs that with proper training won't be yapping, biting little brats. Most of the small dogs that end up that way are the result of inadequate training and leadership from their human.

Have you considered the SPCA or a local rescue group? They do get puppies, they can also help you pick the perfect dog for your life style and expectations.

If you have your heart set on a puppy, I suggest you get "Puppies for Dummies" before you bring one home so you know exactly what you're getting into and how to deal with it. I would also recommend watching the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel, and checking out http://www.dogpsychologycenter.com/ before bringing home any dog so that you can get started on the right foot. Good luck!

Beagles are SUPER high energy dogs and tend to bark a lot- mine didn't even remotely clam down until it was about 4 or 5 years old. It's just their nature- not to mention a puppy is A LOT of work esp. if it has behavioral problems. If I were you I would go online and do research on different breeds. If you're wanting to take the dog with you everywhere then you'll probably want a little dog. Personally if I had to get a dog I'd rather not get a pup and have deal with all the training and potty training.

okay, well i was going through these questions about a year ago. I grew up with dachsunds and love them but they can be barkers, just fyi, not all of them. i have a chi-chon, and love her to death, but she would be smaller than what you are looking for, sounds like. A Bishon would be good, they are low maintence, don't shed, soft coat, average about 12 to 15 lbs, very playful, yet lap dogs. Plus they are very princess like, hehe. My boyfriend's grandparents have one, she stayed with us while they were on vacation for almost 30 days and i didn't want to give her back. they are great dogs, kind of the reason behind me getting my dog, but i wanted one a bit smaller, so i got a chi-chon. Happy dog hunting, oh, and about the beagle, i had one as a kid, not much of a house dog, and barked A LOT. Try Pedigree.com, they have a form you fill in and they tell you which dog types would fit you the best.

Your little dog will be at the animal shelter within a couple of months. You can not have this many expectations when looking for a pet. It would be like getting pregnant and saying I am going to have a baby with blond hair and green eyes that only wakes up once at night to eat and never cries..you are in for a big let down..I feel sorry for the dog that ends up with you!

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are super cute and cuddly, shed very little, are quiet and don't need a trip to the groomers for a clip. They don't drool, either.
Cocker spaniels are great, too, but they need to be clipped about once a month.
Basenjis don't bark (they make a grumbling sound), but they aren't as cuddly as the previous breeds mentioned.

This is my opinion only, but look into a Boston Terrier. I have one and I would not trade him for the world. He loves to ride in the car, and he loves everyone. He is a sturdy little dog, my 2 y/o nephew sits on him and squashes him and pulls his ears and Piston justs loves every minute of it. He doesn't really get excited about anything except chow time and gettin to go ride in the car. He loves to sleep under the covers and he loves to wear coats, shirts, sweaters, etc when it is cold outside. They aren't fru-fru dogs though; regular bathing and nail trims are the only kind of grooming that they require, unlike some of your long haired breeds. Bostons are my fav kind of dogs..... I think this might be the kind of dog you are looking for.

I think a labrodor would be perfect for you, they love other animals and people and are just naturally friendly. They travel in the smallest spaces or the biggest.
The downer of a labrodor is they can become overweight easily, but otherwise they don't bark and trained properly they know when it is time for sleeping and when it is not.
Good luck with your doghunting!!

Border collies are good dogs for play but not a lap dog.. I have a friend who has a prince Charles Spaniel. I just love Yorkie's they are so darn cute and all of the ones I have known are very people oriented.

Beagles are cute and energetic but not too hyper and they are low key for temperament. They are a mid size dog and they don't bark to much.
