if they are driving with constant speeds you can use the formula for position x = v*t where v is speed and t time
and find out when their positions equal to each other
for Brendon you have x = 30*t, for Eric you
have x = 40*(t-3)

30t = 40(t-3)
30t = 40t - 120
t = 12 h- that's the time B. spent driving before Eric caught up with him

so Eric will need 12- 3 = 9 hours

At the three-hour mark (The start of Eric's travel), Brandon is 90 miles ahead.
30 mi/hr * 3 hrs = 90 miles

In 12 hours (9 hours after Eric starts), they will be tied.

40t = 30(t+3) = 30t + 90
10t = 90
t = 9
