You're perhaps thinking of two terms here instead of one.
Existence as a "living thing", which is 'sentient"--capable of knowing that it exists and what nonexistence as a living thing would mean--is one level of awareness.
Life--a desirable-enough level of self-created and self-maintained conditions and values to be categorically positive to the sentient existing one who is involved--is something much more.
You asked the question "what is the ultimate purpose of our existence".
As a race--none. We are not racial, but we are individuals as categorically-capable adult-level selves. Once you no longer have"instincts" or categorically unavoidable racial programmings to contend with, you then take on responsibilities for being honest about what you do know and have to know-- what you need to know in order to guide your subsequent capitalism--your investment of self-owned values in the created profitable higher value) future conditions.
The answer to your question needs therefore to be stated as "what is the ultimate purpose of the life of an adult, categorically-trained sentient self of 45 or older--a mature human being--is simple:
To be productive; to be honest toward reality, one's priorities and other selves; to be non-addictive in behaviors; and to seek beauty, justice and honor as the context of one's specific purposings.
To be happy, on a level good-enough to qualify as thisworldly, ethical and desirable--that's the purpose of any man's life.
Consider the opposites of these qualities- to seek unhappiness; to live on a level not-good-enough to qualify as human; to give up thisworld for some other; to act as a criminal tsar or willing slave toward others; or to sacrifice higher values to lower--that's the purpose of a life turned against itself on Earth.
Of self-destructiveness; of failure to be responsible; of religious antiworldism; of collectivist statism or altruism, of all medieval anti-individual philosophies...
The purpose of life on Earth for the self is therefore:To be happy, by living on a level good-enough to qualify as thisworldly, ethical and desirable.

The ultimate purpose of a persons existance is to do what he can do with his life...to do his duty as a human being.
From the atoms which combine to form molecules, whiclh combine to form cells then tissues then organs then organism, then society....nothing can survive without coexistance and cooperation.
From the microcosm to the macrocosm...the entire universe, this holds true. So the purpose of existance is to do your duty towards the society of which you are a part just like your cheek cells is doing its job.
And you never thought of your cheek cells before i told you how sincere they were in their job did you?

The ultimate purpose of our existence is to amuse God until he does what he wants with us. Which, from my understanding, is He will make us (the ones who DON"T go to hell) like Him. Which to me means we will have His mind and His thougths, and be little God automatons. Personally, I'd like to stay my stubborn self. Those that go to hell, apparently stay there forever, under torment by demons, even though we don't actually have a body after we die, because our body is left here on earth. We'll be little globes of energy. I guess.

By our, do you mean humanity's? In either case, you have the answer.
If you have children, ask yourself what is their ultimate purpose? You are God's child. Humanity is God's family. What does He/She want for His/Her family?

There is no ultimate purpose; we just are.
Individuals can have purposes that they choose for themselves, or not.

Life is just for living. There is no other purpose. We are no different than other things in nature.

What makes you think there is one?
I mean, 5 billion years from now when our sun morphs into a red giant, turning every planet in this system into huge chunks of charcoal, will anything we've ever done really matter?
