Just as strong has he always has been. He didn't flip-flop on anything. Maybe you are thinking about the way he had to dumb down his words a little for Pelosi to be able to keep up.

I've never seen him not act with humility when he is addressing the nation.
If nothing else, the man is certainly respectful of others. Even if others can't be bothered to show respect to him.
