London or any other major cities streets are not safe these days, what with our drinking habits and the lack of respect of the law many people have, its no wonder that you feel the way you do.
Lets face it if someone assaults you and they are under 16yrs of age, they are fully aware that the law can do nothing about it, other than an asbo, which is like a feather in their cap.
This is a major problem in this country, where as in Russia, they would be locked up and probably given a good beating for their crime, and before any do goodies say "oh that's so unfair" think about it crimes like that do not happen in most European countries !!!! OK i know Russia has other problems, and I'm not saying Russia has got it right, but many other countries do not tolerate things like Mugging, drunkenness or street crime's,so why should we ?

Hi Silver
It's not just paranoia thru age. I'm 50 and have lived in my area for pretty much all my life. When I was a kid there was the usual stuff: burglary, pub fights etc. but now, there seems to be a proliferation of "yellow signs" asking for witnesses to assault, sexual assault, and murder. Driving around the area I saw 3 of these signs in one day!!. I personally know someone who was shot 5 times and ended up in a wheelchair following a petty row. The shooter got 18 months. So I'm afraid it is a sign of the times.
I'm glad that I was born in the 50s cos I wouldn't want to be growing up now. As I do not see it getting any better in the future. My wife and I plan to move out in the next couple of years as I don't fancy the prospect of living here thru my 60s.
There are lots of reasons why I think it is happening but I wont go into that for fear of being branded un-pc or racist but I'm afraid that human rights legislation has a lot to answer for.

Not paranoia.
In our day it was just the Teds. And they used to fight each other.
Now there are loads of people, drunk or drugged, ready to set upon anyone walking alone.
And although the Government stats suggest that most crime is down, (untrue - according to recent findings), even they admit that violence has gone up.

No. But you also feel less like you can take care of a bad or physical situation now that you're older. Not paranoia, just wiser with age.

In reality crime statistics show that crime has actually gone down, unfortunately fear of crime due to the media has gone up. also you are much more likely to be assaulted or attacked by someone you know then a stranger.
