We asked other people. We went to the library. We consulted the dictionary or encyclopedia.
The internet has certainly made things easier.

Some of the larger libraries in the world. I know that when I was in High school , our school library had really limited resources and even my town library had more than the school, but still very limited. To do some of the larger research projects i used the Toronto Reference Library. This place had millions of resources on any subject imaginable, spread out on 5 or 6 different floors, as well as rare books.

We listened to the news, read the paper, watched tv, went to the library, looked things up in encyclopedias, dictionaries, and reference books.
We used nature too. Neat weather checking facts: We looked at the sky. If it was red in the morning, bad weather was ahead. If the sky was red at night, the weather would be fair the next day. If it was foggy in the morning, the day would be warm. If the coulds were low, it would rain. If anthills were piled high, it would rain that day.

Libraries. Books and newspapers. Word of mouth. Traveling shows that presented the news of the day as songs and plays. Town criers.
