Very, very few. Especially considering they can chew tobacco and get the same effects. Warren Sapp used to do interviews after the game with huge globs of Skoal stuffed into his bottom lip. (I don't know if he still "chews" or not.) And baseball players chew during the game. Just look at their cheeks and you can see they've got a "dip" in. Or see the circular chew container, in their back-pocket.
Cigarettes dirty up your lungs which can slow down your oxygen intake. Any pro-athlete in their right mind would avoid them. (Not to say all pro-athletes are in their right mind.) Cigarettes mainly hurt your lungs, but chew tobacco hurts your mouth. You need your lungs more than your mouth when it comes to playing sports.
