I suggest you go to the Indian YMCA 41 Fitzeroy Sq W 1 or International Students House opp Great Portland Street Underground station. I have stayed at both these locations 40 years ago and found them great. Britain is "tradition" I am sure they are still the same.

I don't live near London but I know there are lots of friends to be made there. Join a sports team, a book club, a chess club, a dance class or something and you will make a lot of friends.
