The "gunk" is probably a build up of minerals from the water as well as sediment--think about a pond and the scum and you got it. First thing, you don't want to put really harsh chemicals in there. Even with city sewer it can be bad for the pipes, not to mention with a septic tank. It's a messy job but turn the water off to the toilet and flush. This will empty the tank. Wear gloves and be armed with a bunch of rags. I use vinegar and baking soda to remove the layers. Try not to let the gunk you're removing fall into the tank. It may take a couple of go rounds to get rid of all of it. When you're finished, turn the water back on, let the tank fill up and flush. You'll see some come into the bowl but that is okay. Wait and flush again. Make sure to wipe under the rim of the bowl to remove any residue. Every couple of weeks you can put a denture cleaning tablet in the tank and the bowl and let it do it's thing. Takes a flush or two to clear but it helps keep the messy stuff to a minimum. Hope this helps.

It depends on what kind of mineral deposit are set in there. You should use something with hydrochloric acid, it usually takes away anything. Let it sit a few minutes (don't breathe in the fumes) and brush up and around the rim making sure it is all gone. To avoid further buildup you have to do this at least once a week.
If you can't find a product in the local stores I would suggest that you go to a cleaning supply store, make sure you know what the deposits are and they will be sure to find the right product for you.

I'm not too sure what it is. But just try pouring some bleach into the pot, let it sit for a little while and then scrub with your toilet bowl brush. That should get it clean

The hardware stores sell a thing called a Lava Rock, or Volvano Stone. You don't need chemicals or cleaners, you just rub it along the sides of the toilet, and it removes the gunk you describe, water stains, rust, etc. Safe and cheap--under $3.
Best of luck

I have had this same problem. And, I've been everywhere. I even went to a hardward store [home depot] and bought CLR my toilet bowls stay spotless. Trust me. Also I found myself using vinegar it's inexpensive and kills everything and kills the buildup of slime and 'gunk'....

I have no idea what it is, but sprinkle some baking soda along it and scrub with your toilet brush. Baking soda is awesome and it gets everything up. Trust me!
