I'm on it, and have been on it since grade 8, for acne problems. It most definitely helped me in quite a few ways. For example, I never when through the hating my parents stage, because it evened out my hormones quite a bit. I'm 23 now. Over the years, I had a few problems. For one, the pill that I was on was for acne, and when I started getting lots of non-birth control related health problems, they decided the pill had too much of some chemical that can cause blood clots in it, and with my health stuff they didn't want to take any more risks, so I switched pills. Some gave me much more acne, some made me absolutely psycho, but I'm on one now that I love (Yasmin). A couple things you should note: each pill is different and will effect people differently. Talk to your doctor about what's best for you, and make sure you tell her about any history in your family of blood clots or anything of the sort. Another thing, every so often you'll hear in the news about some pill that caused blood clots that's "being looked into". My doctor told me that the risk of clots is always there, and that person just happened to get them, and then the family is making a big thing in the news about it because they got scared. Though you should always keep that in mind, don't let the news reports scare you. There are other options too. There's the birth control patch, there's an IUD (I think that's what it's called), diaphrams, etc. Talk to your doctor about it. What the pill does is tricks your body into thinking your pregnant, so it sort of gets ready for that. I would personally stay away from the ones that give you your period every four months. That just seems super un-natural to me. Congratulations!

Instead of saying 'don't have sex' which wasn't what you seem to want as an answer, I will say that you may have to try a few different ones. If you are with a partner who you know for sure is free from any kind of STD (I suggest a test if he hasn't had one), and you do not wish to use condoms, then personally I suggest the pill. If you have a phone, then put an alarm on it for a time of day you know you will hear it, maybe at a mealtime, so you remember to take your pill every day. I've been told by a hundred people that the pill causes you to put on weight, which is not true. The pill can cause an increase an appetite, so as long as you make sure you don't eat anything extra to normal you should be fine, which shouldn't really be difficult.

Though you don't stop your periods unless you take the pills constantly (not advised, usually taken for three weeks then one week break) it will regulate your period if it isn't very regulated already, and can lessen period pain and lessen the length of time you bleed for as well as the amount of blood.

I'm not a fan of hormonal birth control, although it's pretty safe and effective. It's just not for me. Abstinence isn't going to happen for most people, so stepping over that...I found the condom to be highly effective. They worked just fine without fail for 5 straight years. My only pregnancy was planned. Using a spemicide with it is a good idea. After my first child, I got a copper T IUD without progesterone. It worked pretty well, it hurt like a ***** going in but it was fine after that. It intially made my period heavier, but then it got really light and that was a nice bonus. I noticed it every now and again, but I'm pretty small and that's to be expected. There is a string on it that you have to check, but you can 'tuck it away' if it's bothersome to your man. After my second child, I got a tubal ligation. Also hurt like a *****, but I'm all fun and games now. Well, my life has changed a lot and I had the tubal for reasons that are not relevant now but if I REALLY wanted another kid I could always go in vitro. Overall, I'm glad I had it done, the daily benefits of being sterile outweigh the inconvience of having the option of a child I may never chose to have and then having to use birth control and maybe having it fail at some point. I mean, maybe I'd like another kid but I know I don't need another one RIGHT NOW.

Well if abstinence isn't your thing.......
I don't think there are any methods that don't make you fat and irritable. My personal choice was the Mirena IUD, and so far I like it, I've had it about a year and a half now and its worked well for me.
You can get one with hormones that are released over a periof of 5 years or you can get one without the hormones, best to talk to the doctor about which would be better for you. I have the one with hormones.
The ups of an IUD are its not something you have to take everyday, you stop having periods, you just spot a little every now and then. And you have it changed every 5 - 7 years. And its supposed to be 99.9 % effective.
The downs are it hurts having it inserted, it feels like really extremely bad menstrual cramps while they are inserting it but it only takes about 2 minutes. And after you have it inserted you will have cramps and spotting for about 6 months but eventually that will go away. And also, it's best suited for woman who have at least 2 children already and who have not had any Sexually Transmitted Diseases especially Chlamydia or Gonorhea.
If your interested in it go to....
http://www.mirena-us.com/index.jsp
and you can check it out there.

Good luck on finding something you like!

Oh and in regards to Camden's answer above, the "pull method" does not work, I know several couples who are parents now thanks to the "Pull Method" So please don't try that one!!!!!

Umm...abstinance? No wait, that would cause irritability.

Any form will cause some symptoms..no pain, no gain, right?

I personally like the pill. Specifically Seasonale because you don't have a period but every 3 months. I guess it's known to cause some weight gain but I was overweight when I went on it so I didn't really notice.
As always, the pill only protects from pregnancy and not STD's. If you're not in a monogamous relationship or if your partner hasn't been tested, you should still use a condom.

After my 3rd child since one was concieved while i was on ortho tricyclene and one condom/gel stuff, I decided to use the IUD. It is called Mirena...it also has a low dose b/c in it. Stays in for up to 5 yrs or sooner if you want it out. It is plastic and very small not like the old ones. It doesn't hurt when they put it in, and it has never hurt you fo course can't feel it at all. The best part is that after you have had it in for a while the periods are less and less. NO weird side effects either...yay!!

besides abstinence, the pill is the best for ease of use. yes, some complain that its hard to remember it everyday, but i say... do want to get pregnant, or can you just take a pill and prevent it- how hard is that? you must take it the SAME time everyday, so set an alarm or something like i do to remind yourself. also, unlike the shot, patch or i.u.d., once you stop taking the pill its all out of your system within 24 hours. with those other methods, it can take up to a full YEAR to rid your body of all the hormones and side effects.

Abstinence/Celibacy-it's the only thing that is 100%.

Also, referring to the symptoms part. Living can get you fat , make you grow unwanted hair, make you irritable and keep you in pain.

I have Mirena also. If you have had at least one child I think it is something you should consider. I have had it for six months and I'm very pleased with that I got it. I had no pain getting it put in. I have had spotting off and on but that is it.
