Bad idea. Banning something just calls more attention to it, and usually causes a backlash. It's also against the principles of free speech, which are held very dear by Americans. Any ban would be hard to enforce - what would the consequence be? How do you catch people? Bad idea.

Well, me being an african american teenager, it doesn't really phase me because I hear it so much, but banning the word wouldn't work. The word has even become a part of American culture, along with the hip-hop culture. It's kind of impossible to ban the word...and what kind of punishment would there be for it. It's a waste of time--there are more important problems.

I just saw on the news that there is a sheriff in Texas who wants to ban that word from his town (population 2300). I'm all for it, but why don't we ban the 'f' word and 'c' word too, which personally, I think the 'f' word is just as vile and #2 what about 'freedom of speech'?

Pointless and impossible. Pointless because banning a word does nothing. The word itself is not the problem. It's the person that says it that is. Taking away the word still leaves the person.
Also, this is impossible. We don't live in an Orwell book. You can't ban a word.

How can you ban a word? No matter what, one of our country's greatest principals is free speech.

I think if people called less attention to it and didn't make such a stink about it, it wouldn't be any big deal. Look at "honky" and "cracker." No white person cares if anyone calls them that. It's like saying "the h-word"... how ridiculous is that???

This IS America. The Constitution gives us freedom of speech. There a lot of things in this country that are not ideal but as Americans we are given choices. I hope you understand that.

i never say that word (makes it kind of hard to read "huck finn" to the kids, but i get around it). i think it's hateful and those who say it sound ignorant when they do. but i would kill and die to preserve any american's right to say it or any other word, no matter much i may object to it personally.
banning words? what is this? china?
