She should try to adapt to the new area. Lose the northern accent and the big city mentality and learn to be patient and laid back. She's not in Chicago any more. This could take a while like a year or so, be positive about the change and give it a chance.

Having relocated to the South from California many years ago, i can tell you it is a very different culture down here. People here still consider people from the north as enemies. The term Damn Yankee has been uttered within my hearing more than once. Damn Liberal is another term I've heard more than once even though I hold Conservative view.

The consensus is that northerners are considered loud and rude. In the south they seem to frown on people who speak their mind - unless of course they follow it up with "Bless her Heart". See, you can say anything you want here and be as insulting as you want to anyone as long as you "Bless their Heart". Example: "Poor Patricia, that skirt makes her look like a walrus in heat, bless her heart." See? Patricia's heart is sufficiently blessed so she wasn't actually insulted.

Also, when addressing a superior or anyone a generation older than you - your boss for instance it is proper and expected to say "Yes, sir" or "Yes, Ma'am".

Sounds more like cultural differences than anything else. It took me awhile to adjust. I love it here now and wouldn't go back to California for anything.

I think the key term is "supposedly because of her personality". People are rarely "fired" because of their personality, unless their personality includes causing turmoil in the office, back mouthing your superiors, etc.
