Just the other day I noticed that Norton anitvirus was showing that there was a problem with my computer. The Norton icon was flashing red. I could not get Norton to open and fix the problem, so I shut down my computer. Now I cant get the computer on! Cant even start the unit in safe mode! The computer is 4 years old, but still, until yesterday, ran great, with out any problems. Now I dont know what to do next. Anyone out there and any ideas?

Thanks...

Hello-

Just because Norton indicated a problem with your computer does not mean it was a virus. The best thing you can do is take the hard drive out and install it as a slave on another computer (most computers are set for cable select so you do not need to mess with jumpers). Along the same line, you could take the drive out and attach it to another computer via a usb or firewire harddrive enclosure. Once hooked to another computer, you could scan it with the antivirus, antispyware and the check-disk feature of the other computer (if XP, can be done by right-clicking on the drive in My Computer and going to properties, then tools, then check now) . If the scans turn up nothing and you can access the drive, it is most likely an issue with something else on your current computer (like a loose or bad cable or other hardware issue).

Have you tried your restore disk that you got from the manufactuer? You would lose all information on the computer but you may be able to get it running again. Of course the computer will have to start far enough to read the disk.
