The government want us to use public transport to save the enviroment ,but when i priced up to go to london by train with my partner and son it worked out at a £149.95 return ,yet the same cost by car would be around £40. (diesel car) around (£110 less).
So if these lot in power really wanted us to us public transport to save the enviroment ,why don't they try and make public transport cheaper?
Any views on this?
I live around 140 miles from london

Sorry to inform you, but public transport has always been a 'rip-off'. Back in my teens, when I lived in Hastings, you could make a day trip to London for £1.50 (one pound fifty pence). Since the average wage then was something like £5 to £8 per week [c1954] you can see just how expensive such a trip really was.
The price of public transport will not come down, it will if anything, continue to rise and usually over the annual rate of inflation. It's the reason so many of us head off in our cars. In the long run, even including the price of the car, it's cheaper, especially if you travel 12,000 miles a year or more.
The best advice I can offer you on this and almost any other subject which is under political debate, is to speak to the older members of your family, most especially those of the 'Grey Wolf' tribe. Anyone of my generation, [born 1941] will confirm that nothing really changes except the date. The poor are ever with us and prices continue to rise higher than our incomes. The majority of us today are living on borrow cash.

The buses and the underground (in Glasgow anyway) are both reasonably good value. The trains however seem to have a price hike every other week. I used to commute into Glasgow every weekday on a fifteen minute train journey. The monthly travel card was £60+ and that was 3 years ago. Probably neary £75 now. Thankfully, I live close enough to work now to walk most days.
Public Transport should definatly have some sort of price control on it though.

I think the government secretly want us to drive cars and fly in planes and they don't care if well all burn to death after all they get lots of tax through these means. I use public transport in London and it's OK but I rarely go out of London because of the prices it would like be cheaper to go on holiday in Paris than take a train to Wick in Scotland.

Public transport is AWFUL!
Until it is made affordable, punctual (and I mean set your watch by it punctual) Clean, nice and comfortable I wont be using it.
The GNER service between Leeds and London has around 15 prices for tickets on the same train. I once sat next to a lady who had payed 3 times what I had for my ticket and we were sat together in reserved seats.
It offers a Saver Return ticket for £77 or two singles for as litle as £9.50 each way.
The local bus service is a shambles, The early morning buses come when they want and often not at all. Its a joke.

Yes. It costs far more than using your own car. If the government were serious about this public transport would much, much cheaper than it currently is. Most other countries I've visited have much more reliable and economical systems than we have here.
It costs £22 one way to go on the (invariably late) train from Edinburgh to Dundee one way (walk up fare) but I paid less than £50 for return flights from Edinburgh to Amsterdam?!? How does that make sense?

I think First Rail in Glasgow is brilliant. £40 per month gets me to and from work. 20 mins each way. Always on time, always get a seat, clean and warm. Magic. Much better than the buses.
So no I don't think public transport is a rip off.

The Public transportation is a saving grace - especially at times when one really needs it.
Take the bus and lower your cost. That's not going to bring you much later into London than had you been driving your diesel car..
