I'm only 2nd or 3rd generation American from Italy. However I somehow got very, very pale skin, so I never really have an issue. The only way you can tell I'm Italian is my nose...and my incredible love for Italian food. I didn't pick up the New Jersey accent or anything. Rest of the family did, but I missed out on it. Slightly a blessing now.

I do agree with you, however. I grew up around people of all different nationalities so color and race have never been a problem for me.

Hope you feel better after that rant. :D

wow, it depends on the person, per se. If a person (in your case- Italians) let other people put them down, well, it will always be an issue. but if you stand firm in your ground and believe that there is nothing different about your race, it won't bother you at all what ignorants say.

Remember that the "whites" are actually a race mixture of all kinds of races. Many so called "whites" do not speak two languages, (as i am sure you do) and are always trying to put you down because you have become the competition.

I live in a town that was settled with Italians, Irish and Portuguese. The Italians, depending on what part of Italy they came from, were of white skin if they came from the northern part of Italy and of a tan color if from the south part. So they are thought of as being white.

Peoples of the world have a different concept of who is called White and why. It has little to do with the colour of your skin. Even if a White skinned European with an Asian accent joined a group of white skinned Americans he would be less friendly with the Asian Born European. A swarthy complexion is enough excuse for some -one with racial preferences on his or her mind to reject the Asian .

I am American and part Italian, and so are many of my friends... The issue of skin color has never come up. I am sorry you live in an area where people feel that is important.

You are Italian to me. I've never thought about the color of one's skin. Yes, this country is a democracy, and yes, segregation was a part of it's culture. Every country has stuff they'd rather forget about.

Because most italians or at least many italians are possessing a great tan which has long been the frustration of many white americans.
They may not mean it in a negative way.

I don't understand what you are trying to say. I am an American of some Italian ancestry and no one asks me if I'm white. Italians are generally considered white anyways. If people are asking you if you are white, chances are that they are just wondering where you are from.

I don't know any Americans who are worried whether Italians are white or not nearly as much as the various Italian people on Y!A are worried about which Italians are whiter than the other Italians. What is wrong with you people?...
