Actually it is not safe to drink. It has been proven that deuterium does not interact in the same way as hydrogen in the body, In small amounts, it is not dangerous, However, drinking pure D2O is toxic. Because Deuterium has slightly different chemical properties from hydrogen, it does not take part as readily in chemical reactions. (Such as carboxylations, dehydrogenations, etc.) Also, hydrogen bonding would be severely affected beause the polarity of D2O is changed.

Good question now that we're hearing there's drugs in the city water that aren't filtered out. I never thought it was really SAFE to drink, but am also finding out that bottled water may be no different. Still checking on the facts, but not liking what I have found so far.

Heavy water has the same chemical properties as regular water so it should be ok to drink. I'm sure it's very expensive so I wouldn't recommend it. It is not used in nuclear reactors. It is however used in nuclear weapons. It is not radioactive either.
