In the documentary "Dark Waters Rising" on the animal rescue in New Orleans after Katrina, one of the rescuers, when debating about whether to return animals to the owner or adopt them out, said, "These homes weren't habitable BEFORE Katrina."

Our government couldn't even manage to get in to give them clearn water even though the Canadian Mounted Police managed to bring supplies all the way from our northern border.

It is no secret that there are many, many families STILL left without the means to rebuild.

Should it be a surprise to anyone that the "terrorist" (crime) rate in New Orleans is sky rocketing through the roof of the Superdome?

If we don't care enough about people to provide them with basic necessities i.e food, shelter, and healthcare...why should they care about us or hold our homes or our lives inviolate?

Is it possible that poverty and inequality could have anything to do with it?

Thank you for a wonderful question full of insight.

You have hit the nail on the head. It is proved beyond doubt that at the root of crime is the foundation laid by injustice and in majority of the cases it is social injustice, that is, poverty, deprivation, racism, groupism etc. The terrorist is a poor brainwashed person... such brainwashing becomes possible because the person is already suffering from a sense of deprivation and injustice. I personally believe that nobody would risk life to indulge in either crime or terrorism if there was equitable distribution of wealth and opportunities amongst all people.... yes, equitable rather than equal is the justice that people expect. It is inequity and injustice that produces social enemies such as criminals or terrorists.

It seems the all the us government money is going over to Iraq for the troops and the war effort. I think that this is wrong and the first priority should go to the peoples needs of the U.S. first. But your government doesn't seem to care enough to look after their people in need. This is to bad. Personally, I cannot condone criminal activity as an excuse to get what you want. There are other choices. You can relocate and get a job somewhere else and start over. Crime is not the answer for anyones future.

Who provided you with what you have? While there is no doubt in my mind that racism covert and overt is alive and well I am sick of hearing excuses. "These homes weren't habitable BEFORE Katrina." You do not need the government to clean your home for you. Why should money be given to people who are not even responsible enough to keep their own home in order? Giving money and resources to people who refuse to work because of ignorance or laziness is not helping that person. Black business ownership was at an all time high, the majority of black children were born to married couples, the black marriage rate was nearly the same as that of whites. Do you know when this was true? Prior to the bleeding hearts giving welfare to the poor sad black people. Good intentions which had dreadful consequences. These people need to struggle and get it together.

Yes, poverty plays a role.

If you have a job and good living conditions you are less likely to be filled with hate.

But the leaders in terrorist countries have allowed religious schools to brainwash student at an early age blaming all of their problems on the US and Israel as a way of deflecting that anger away from their own government which keeps them in poverty.

I would say evilness produces a terrorist. Some countries strive to make some of their people terrorist, so they can get them to do the terrible things that they do. So many have destroyed their own bodies by being blown up, thinking they would immediately go to heaven and live forever. etc. It's a shame that so many people can be talked into anything.

I agree with your assessment of the Katrina situation, and I've always wondered how the U.S. has escaped overt group terrorism in the wake of our terrible history.

The group that has really shocked me is that of Native Americans. When we think of terrorists, we often think of peoples who feel they have been wronged and have no means of fighting a war against the wrongdoer--that's a typical recipe for terrorism. I think it's a shock (and maybe a testament to the hearts of Native Americans, and even African Americans) that they have not organized wide scale terror against the U.S. majority (of which I am one of, I should say).

Yes, its a big part of it. But remember too that fanaticism creates terrorists...as does manipulation, mind control, brain washing....
