Nowadays a lot of domestic market Japanese DVDs come with English subtitles. You would need enough Japanese to navigate through the menus, but the sub button on the remote will turn on/change the subs. Just look at the "fine print" on the back of the package to make sure what you are getting. I have a Japanese copy of DOA that has decent English subtitles. The special features and menus are all in Japanese, but it does have subtitles for the film itself.

I bought mine at Wal-Mart...if you remember the animated movie..Spirited Away..Kao Nashi.. I found Memoirs of a Geisha,,but subtitled in French...
Twikfat is right..most you can buy with English Subtitles is for international release only. .
Try Wal-Mart..some have great prices but old movies other than that maybe you can ask local video shop near your place if they stored Japanese movies with translations.
I forgot you are in Japan..well..WalMart sells international
videos.. just incase..
