I'm gonna buy one tomorrow brand new from a shop.

Does it say on the box or do I have to power it up first and check then?

Go to the > System Settings > System Information > System Software. This will tell you the current firmware version of your PSP.

It really doesn't matter. You update your PSP through the wireless connection.
If you don't have a wireless Internet connection available, then you can also download the latest system updates from the PSP website to synchronize with your PSP.
