I had this problem with my Mazda 3.

The RAC attendant suggested two options, the latter of which worked instantly.

1) There is a problem with the immobiliser and the dealer should fix it.

2) Rub the metal key gently with some sand paper. This removes static friction and the key should work fine.

If it is a fairly modern merc there is an issue with the ignition not recognising the key fob , it is quite common and is a job for the dealers i"m afraid. what you can do is remove the plastic cowling from around the wheel and you can access the cable to de-activate the steering lock then at least you can steer the car to aid recovery. otherwise you will need to get the front wheels on skates to move the car or it will need a full lift with a hi-ab onto a flatbed ...sorry.

This may sound dumb, but look in your user manual. Some of the high end euro cars require a certain way to turn the key. New BMWs can be tricky.

I take it you're slotting the key in and it won't turn. If it used to be okay, you may have issues within the lock itself which it would be best to let a dealer sort out. You may need the barrel drilled out and replaced.

Are you sure the fob is for your Merc and not for some other Merc?
