A "sleeper" is a car that looks like there have been no modifications to it...factory equipment all the way around (the outside)....but the engine and drive train components have been upgraded...so what you end up with is a very fast car that doesn't look like it...mainly used to sucker people into a race that they don't have a chance of winning.

A sleeper car refers to a car that doesn't look fast or on old junker that has a high performance motor in it......just like an every day average car with a built up engine.
eg: I use to have a 1973 4 door Dodge Dart,it was rust and ugly and i put a 440 in it,didn't put headers on it and put on a set of quiet mufflers and hopped up the motor so it was fast...i would pull up to a stoplight and people would thing it was a piece of crap car.....until all they seen was my taillights when i beat them off the line and leave them in the dust....i won alot of money with that car...people would wanna race for money.
I have built a few sleeper cars....those cars will pay for themselves.

A 'sleeper' looks just like an off the lot boring car, but has been heavily modified inside the engine/drive train/suspension/brakes to perform like a sports car.
I knew a guy with a '94 Ford Escort who had installed a Mazda Miata engine and transmission into it, along with upgraded suspension and brakes. He would pull up next to ricers (kids who stuck a coffee can on the exhaust pipe of mommy's honda civic and think that performance stickers make your car go faster). He would rev the engine up - and anyone looking at it would just crack up and go 'escort--bwahahaha', until he dumped the clutch and left black marks for about 20 yards and dusted the living sh** out of the car next to him.
Kind of a waste of time, since it was an escort, but he actually made quite a bit of money betting people that his car could beat theirs.

To my knowledge it is a car that doesn't look all tricked out, but it could beat the pants off of alot of cars when it comes to racing. Basically, you wouldn't expect what it has under the hood. Unlike the "ricers" who insist on looking fast, but in all actuality my 5 door Hyundai Elantra could beat....
