make sure you get shorter skis, they will not make you go to fast at first so you can get the hang of it. I learned this the hard way because i didn't tell the ski rental people it was my first time and they give you skis according to your height ( i am almost five foot nine! It was a hard day for me! the taller you are the longer the ski! They will give you something appropriate for your first time.

I skied at Keystone on Wednesday. If you can take a lesson at a local ski resort beforehand, it will be cheaper. Start off with the green runs called Scout and Endeavor to work on your snowplow stop, then move on to Schoolmarm (it's 3.5 miles long and a lot of fun). Take it slow and look for the easiest route on your way down to avoid hills and big bumps. There's a green run at Keystone called Toads that starts off rough because it initially merges with a more difficult blue run; I've seen lots of people fall on that one. Have a great time!

I would go to an indoor ski slope if there is one around you. They are really good to have a first lesson at as they are small and not so overbearing.

If not, I would do plenty of leg excercizes to strengthen your leg muscles, as you will be using a lot of muscles you did'nt know existed, and if you get sore it is easier to give up.

Practice your "snowplough" which is the key to getting down a slope the first time.
It is the way we learn to stop and to turn.

Don't worry about the ski size as skis have changed and they are now shorter and more curved making them easier to manouver.

Enjoy and I hope this helps.

If no one in your group is good enough/willing to teach you take a lesson. The basics you will learn(control speed, stop and turn) will enable you to have fun and be safe.
