As a result of the politically correct liberal school
system in this country, students have never been educated enough in American History,
Civics, American Government History, World History and therefore DO NOT have any knowledge, whatsoever, of their own Government. They DO NOT know the difference!!

Ignorance is bliss. People misuse words all the time. Anyone who has access to a dictionary knows that the United States is a Constitutional Republic but politicians/media personalities (propagandists) perpetuate the Democracy myth by restating it.
Just for clarification to those who might read this: a Democracy is a system of government in which the citizens have the right to vote directly on ALL issues proposed to affect them.
A Republic is a system of government in which the citizens have the right to elect representatives and delegate that decisionmaking responsibility to them.
Most Americans are blatantly unaware that our nation's monetary and economic policy is controlled by a privately owned corporation: The Federal Reserve System. And most American's are ignorant of the fact that this same corporation controls the flow of information by owning (majority stock) mainstream media and controlling academia by controlling who gets to sit on the governing bodies at universities and colleges across America. Just as they control many corporations, name brand and multi national as well, by controlling the majority stock.
It's no surprise that Americans are so clueless. Many politicians never mention so much as a whisper about the fact that the Federal Reserve is a privately owned corporation or that it intentionally crashed the American economy (to dominate it) both precipitating and perpetuating the Great Depression.
Joseph Stalin was right: tell a lie long enough and soon enough people will begin to believe it.

Are you a member of the John Birch Society? They're the ones who make a point of stressing this picayune point.
Check The American's Creed. It specifies that we are "A Democracy within a Republic".
A Republic need not be a Democracy. It could be an elite oligarchy. Is that what you want? Who do you want to exclude from power? Racial minorities? Women? If you want to limit the franchise to white male property owners, well, I got you beat on that accouont, and I'd use my vote to oppose all your right-wing policies.

No, they usually don't know the difference. Many people here seem to not have basic knowledge of civics (that also answers the "why" part of your question.).
