I know the solution is x = 0. I'm confused about how to get there. Here's what I've come up with:

3(2x - 5) - 2(4x + 1) = -5(x + 3) -2
6x - 15 -8x -2 = -5x - 15 -2
6x - 8x -15 -8x - 8x -2 = -5x - 8x - 15 -2 (Is this correct? I used the absolute value of each x term)
-2x -17 = -3x - 17
-2x + 3x = 17 -17
x = 0

I don't understand your third step (6x - 8x -15 -8x - 8x -2 = -5x - 8x - 15 -2). From the second step
: 6x - 15 -8x -2 = -5x - 15 -2
just collect all the x and numbers
(6x-8x) + (-15-2) = -5x + (-15-2)
-2X - 17 = -5X - 17
Now get all the x on one side and numbers on the other
-2x + 5x - 17 +17 = -5x + 5x -17 + 17
3x = 0
x = 0

3(2x - 5) - 2(4x + 1) = -5(x + 3) -2
6x - 15 - 8x - 2 = -5x - 15 - 2
shorten the equation by adding like values together
-2x -17 = -5x - 17
add 5x to each side
3x -17 = -17
add 17 to each side
3x = 0
x = 0

6x - 15 - 8x -2 = - 5x -15 -2
6x - 8x - 15 - 2 = - 5x - 17
-2x - 17 = - 5x -17
+5x = +5x
3x - 17 = -17
3x = -17 +17
3x = 0
x = 0

Yes the answer is 0. I just worked it a bit differently. If you are ever in doubt, plug in the answer to see if it comes out right.

3(2x - 5) - 2(4x + 1) = -5(x + 3) -2
6x - 15 -8x -2 = -5x - 15 -2
6x-8x-15-2 = -5x-17
-2x-17 = -5x - 17
-2x+5x-17 = -5x+5x-17
3x-17 = -17
3x-17+17=-17+17
3x = 0
3x/3=0/3
x = 0

Use distributive property:
6x-15-8x-2=-5x-15-2
-2x-17=-5x-17

Add 5x from both sides:
3x-17=-17

Add 17 from both sides:
3x=0

Divide 3 from both sides:
x=0

Check:
3(2(0)-5)-2(4(0)+1)=-5(0+3)-2
3(-5)-2(1)=-5(3)-2
-15-2=-15-2
-17=-17

I hope this helps and good luck with your class!

I don't think your 3rd line is correct. Get all the x's on one side of the = sign, and all the numbers on the other side. Try this for line 3:

6x-8x+5x=15+2-15-2
-2x + 5x = 0
3x = 0
x=0

I get 6x-15-8x-2=-5x-15-2
-2x-17=-5x-17
Add 17 to both sides, add +5x to both sides
3x=0.
x=0.

you may search roots between divisors of -16 (free term of f(x)) try +/-1 1, +/-2 , +/-4 , +/-8 , +/-16 I tried first 2 again 2 and 1 x^5-5x^4+12x^3-24x^2+32x-16= x^4(x-2)-3x^3(x-2)+6x^2(x-2)-12x(x-2)+... (x-2)(x^4-3x^3+6x^2-12x+8)= (x-2)[x^3(x-2)-x^2(x-2)+4x(x-2)-4(x-2)... (x-2)^2(x^3-x^2+4x-4)= (x-2)^2(x^2(x-1)+4(x-1))= (x-2)^2(x-1)(x^2+4) You may continue over complex numbers and rewrite like (x-2)^2(x-1)(x-2i)(x+2i)
