Emperor penguins breed on fast ice. That is permanent sea ice that is held fast to the coast by offshore islands. The pairs mate and the male takes the egg and holds it on his feet under a warm brood pouch while the female goes to sea for the winter. The males huddle together during the long winter, incubating the egg.

When the chick hatches, the male has enough stored food to give the chick its first feed and then they wait for the return of the female. When the female returns, she takes the chick and feeds it while the male goes to sea. If she doesn't return or returns late, the chick dies.

At that time of the year, the sea could be 100km or more from the colony so the birds have a long walk. As the season progresses, the sea ice melts and the water gets a lot closer which is more convenient for feeding the youngsters.

There are quite a few colonies around the coast with new ones being discovered every now and then. Extensive travel by helicopter has revealed peviously hidden colonies.
