Most, if not all, cell companies claim they don't sell your number or information to any third companies. And I believe them, having worked for one of the major carriers for 4 years. So that being said. I am not 100% sure. Could just be random. Maybe the telemarketers are randomly searching blocks of numbers. Like 916-600-0000 through 816-699-9999 and call them all.

ok i worked for a telemarketing company for 5 yrs... ill expalin a few things to ya.. the do not call.gov is a joke.. if you have a pre-existing buisness releationship with a company they can call you all they want, even if you are on the list. but lets say you tell them you want taken off there callin list, you are off the list... but as soon as you make your credit card payment, guess what your right back on the list... the donotcall.gov was ONLY set up to stop cold callers.. (just dial random numbers so sell who knows what) and it has worked. and private numbers dont matter. it might not be listed in the phone book, but all telephone numbers are aval. some just cost more to obtain then other. when call lists are generated they are made by teirs. 1-4 one being someone that will buy stuff over the phone and (four) ppl that will tell ya to go pound salt. now if yuou where on that teir 1 part of the list and ya change your number the companys will pay pretty good money to get your new number.

and as for selling your number. it all depends on the compnay. most of the time they will not "SELL" your number, but if you cancel your credit card count on your number goin out. but also its not concideded selling when a company trades numbers with another company....

just so ya know.. credit card companys make almost over 5 billion $ a yr off of telemarketing call.. with out telemarketing your interest rate would sky rocket....

i no longer do telemarketing but i was a shift manger for 5 yrs. theres alota shaddy companys out there but since the do-not-call list most of the small "shaddy" compnays are gone..

The numbers are generated by a computer. They don't know its a cell phone or landline, or even a real phone number until its dialed.

Register ALL phone numbers at the Do Not Call list below. Then file a complaint against EACH call like this. They will stop.

How do they get your number? Well for one, if you get on the computer and say fill in a application to try a new product or for a survey which you fill a phone number in is one way. If you read the fine print on some things you fill out, it says something about permission to give to third parties. Then the third party probably sells your name to someone. That is how it happened to me. Even though I had put myself on the USA do not call list. But those are usually overseas.
