McAfee Security suite it's quick and easy but you must keep it up to date buy purchasing the subscription. Also just stay away from bad websites, sites that you try and get cracks for software or free sites for naughty material. Also stay way from file sharing such as lime wire. Then you really shouldn't have any problems at all.

Free products are ok but they just won't get the job done and you might need a few of the free programs to do it all then you have all these programs running in the background slowing down your machine, then you download more free ones cause you think the ones you have don't work and the endless cycle begins. You just junk up your machine to save a few bucks. Also sometimes you have to be a little bit more advanced to take full advantage of the freebies. I went through this myself for years.
If you want to try some out, just go to www.download.com you’ll find some free ones there and you can also purchase/demo a bunch too.

For free downloads you generally can get only anti-spyware and virus scanners, there are some firewallls out there just a case of searching for them, a good edition to use is AVG, a good anti-virus would be AVAST! search for it through google.
If your looking for maximum security you are looking for a good anti-virus, spyware remover and firewall, all with a good 20 mins search should be found.

You need a virus protector, spywear, etc. My advice to you is to download a 30 day trial security suite from Zone alarm and if you are happy with it after the 30 days, then purchase it. I only use Zone Alarm because I find it the best.

3 main things !!
1. a fire wall (not a free one, worth paying for this. macafee or norton)
2. an antivirus programme (not a free one, worth paying for this. macafee or norton)
3. anti spyware (the above 1,2 usually come as a package but ignor any claims them make at offering anti spyware. they are usless.. get a programme designed especially for this task alone)
and 4. a registry cleaner

Try anti-virus software. This is free and works good:
www.avast.com
Also for spy-ware, you can install ad-aware which is free.
