Two issues here: Why and who? The who is very easy, the why is a bit tougher. First the who.
1. The evidence thus far found points to one and ONLY one person: Lee Harvey Oswald. Those who claim otherwise haven't read enough about this case. The evidence against Oswald is overwhelming with no room for educated people to doubt his guilt. Here are some basic facts:
a. Oswald owned the rifle used in the assassination
b. Oswald was seen carrying a mysterious, long package into work with him the morning of the assassination which he claimed curtain rods. He left the building without the same package. No curtain rods were found in the building but Oswald's rifle WAS found on the same floor that witnesses saw a gunman firing at the president. Oswald's prints were found on that rifle--no one else's were. The brown wrapping paper used to conceal the weapon was found at the very window where witnesses saw Oswald firing at the President.
b. Oswald was the ONLY employee to fail to return to work after the assassination took place. Instead he fled the scene within 90 seconds, ran seven blocks to catch a bus that had a regularly scheduled stop across the street from the place of the assassination.
c. Oswald then feld to his boarding house where he picked up a revolver and when later stopped and questioned by Officer J.D. Tippit shot and killed the officer in front of five credible eyewitnesses. Oswald was later arrested in the Texas Theater WITH the revolver used to kill Officer Tippit.
d. The only traceable bullet recovered that day was matched to Oswald's rifle to the exclusion of ALL other weapons on the earth.
e. Oswald was a Marine Corps sharpshooter that had nearly 9 seconds to fire three shots at the president--a feat which has been duplicated countlessly by similarly-trained marksmen.
f. Oswald never asked why he was being arrested 90 minutes after the assassination. Not once.
Now for the why?
a. In a murder investigation motive really doesn't matter. In a court of law, motive never has to be discussed. Why? Because unless the guilty reveals his or her motive(s) we can only guess. This is the case with Oswald. He never confessed to killing Kennedy but we DO know that he was a pro-Marxist, pro-Castro supporter who hoped to make a name for himself somehow. He knew that Kennedy and Castro hated one another and Oswald had hoped to travel to Cuba and meet Castro some day but never got the opportunity. For a young man with no real talents, skills, education to speak of, and no accomplishments in life, the chances of being noticed by Castro were pretty slim. Unless of course he did something that castro would admire and adore. Killilng the President of the United States would do nicely. Personally I think Oswald's motive was to draw attention to himself and get an audience with Fidel Castro. In fact some have theorized (not without evidentiary support) that after Oswald killed Kennedy he was heading for a Greyhound bus terminal to catch a bus to Mexico and then hope to get to Cuba with his story to relate to Castro.
And there you have a level-headed, historically sound response to your question.

There are two possible truths: the one we already know and the one we will never know.
Lee Harvey Oswald was an avowed communist and loner who needed to make his mark on the world. Many studies reveal there was only one shooter and that was Oswald. He was an expert marksman in the Marine Corps. It's entirely possible he acted alone.
But conspiracy theories will always win out. Maybe there's some credence to them but not will ever be proven. One of the most popular ideas is that Oswald was somehow an operative for secretive cabal of rogue government agencies and corporate interests that wanted to get rid of JFK. Why? Most likely it was about Vietnam and the immense profit to be made from a full blown war over there. Kennedy most likely would not have involved us so steeply. Can that be proven? Not in a million years.
And by the way, if you have ever seen or will see Oliver Stone's JFK, do not take anything you see in that film as fact. It's all conjecture and most of it is distorted beyond anything resembling what actually happened. You shouod read various sources on your own and draw your own opinions.

the Illuminati of course here is a quote from Illuminatus! They looked again, and they saw Lee Harvey Oswald perched in the window of the Texas School Book Depository; and he, again, wore the face of Stanley Laurel. And because this world had been created by a great god named Earl Warren, Oswald fired the only shots that day, and John Fitzgerald Kennedy was, as the Salvation Army charmingly expresses it, "promoted to glory." "This is Confusion," said Athena with her owl-eyes flashing, for she was more familiar with the world created by the god Mark Lane. Then they saw a hallway, and Oswald-Laurel was led out between two policemen. Suddenly Jack Ruby, with the face of Oliver Hardy, stepped forward and fired a pistol right into that frail little body. And then Ruby spoke the eternal words, to the corpse at his feet: "Now look what you made me do," he said. And that was the second Vision see link below for the WHOLE STORY

Hard to say as there are theroies that make some sense. Like he was killed, perhaps to keep us in 'Nam. Oswald is blamed but the so called proof doesn't add up. The "magic bullet" is unlikely to have traveled its patch, but if it did it was found with no markings, even the markings that should have been made from the firing of the gun.

According to the Rolling Stones:
"After all it was you and me."
So that settles the JFK conspiracy as well as his brother Bobby's death. As for his retarded sister, and Rose, I guess we did that too. But, John's brother Joe was a dumb pilot, and his son JFK Jr. was a bad pilot.
