Byzantium was a Greek city founded in 667BC. It became the capital of the Roman Empire on 11 May, 330AD, and was renamed Constantinople. It was conquered by the Turks on 29 May, 1453 and renamed Istanbul.
The flag of the city (from its Greek days) was a crescent moon. When the Turks captured the city they adopted the crescent moon flag as their own, which led to the general use of the crescent moon in Islamic countries around the world.
The history of Byzantine Empire (as the Roman Empire based around Constantinople has since become known) is extraordinarily rich. Long despised by the Popes in Rome as 'competitors' , and pillaged by a combination of Norman adventurers and Venetian traders in 1204, it was for all of that time the sole defender of Europe against invasion from the East by Arabs and Turks.
The Byzantine Empire was often criticised by Europeans (who didn't have powerful Arab and Turkish armies on their borders) for 'doing deals' with other Middle Eastern countries and maintaining trading relations with them. The Byzantine political philosophy (at its best) was 'don't attempt by military means what can be achieved through less costly means, but when military force is necessary, use overwhelming force'.
