A lot of times advertisers will say the have 1GB when what they mean is they have 1000MB. This in combination with other overhead due to the software on it will bring you down to 925MB. Same goes for your hard drive.

Be confused. Be very confused.

Some of it is down to a mega and a giga... memory and disk drive makers seem to think that mega = 1000 kilo and giga = 1000 mega. That means they are short relivering compared to what Windows sees. Because Windows thinks mega = 1024 kilo and giga = 1024 mega.

Some of it is down to formatting. Some of the memory is used to mark out the grid (sectors, tracks, cylinders on disks) into which *your* data is written. The same is true for stick drives... some of it is used in formatting.

Some of it is lost in providing the file tables... the information that holds 'what is where' information so you can get your files back from the disk.

You've not been robbed... or at least you've not been robbed any more than anyone else. Mind you... if you paid $1000 for a 100Gb disk... maybe you were.

The extra memory is used by the computer for processing and applications.

In otherwords, this is for ANY computer. The advertised is the max your computer drive is without ANY applications in it.
