They "work" because either:
1) The person you're playing with is toying with your mind.
2) The ideomotor effect. Your fingers will subconsciously twitch from time to time, and if you're thinking about ghosts and the like, your mind will subconsciously make your fingers twitch towards things you "want" to see based on your thoughts and observations. Sort of like a dream, except you're awake and it's in your fingers rather than in your head.
If you can get an Ouija board to work for you by yourself, try the following experiment.
1) Play normally and have a friend sitting nearby. Have him record any "messages" you receive on a piece of paper.
2) Then, blindfold yourself and play while having a friend sitting nearby. Have him record any "messages" you receive on a piece of paper.
When you're blindfolded, any "messages" you receive will likely be nonsensical because you can't see where you're subconsciously pushing the marker.
Although I guess a hardcore spiritualist type will tell you that the spirits use your eyes to guide the pointer, and that's why blindfolding yourself doesn't work.
The ideomotor effect is also the principle behind those fork-shaped divining rods that people used to use to find water and such.

Ouija boards are a game nothing more. It works by involuntary or unconscious movement. If you think this isn't true, try doing it blind folded. Have someone watching to see what you've spelled. Most likely it will look some thing like this: jhcur
You can make a homemade one.
Write letters A to L on the first row and M to Z on the second on a large piece of card board. In one corner put Yes and the other put No. Use a glass as your pointer. Have fun.

What a ouija board does is basically opens a door and invites absolutely anybody hanging around out there to come on in. Now here is the question, if they don't work you would be wasting your money, if they do work is that really something you want to do. If you are not sure then try it with your house first, leave the front door wide open and a big sign up saying everybody welcome make yourself at home and see who decides to come in. If you don't like the sound of that in the real world with people you can actually see and deal with then I really wouldn't recommend it in the spirit world.

No, they are interesting in the fact that you "play" with them and they supposedly have some "power". Reality, today's ouija boards are made on an assembly line. They are marketed as games. Which is exactly what they are.
Older ouija boards were scams, used by fortune-tellers or medians as a way to supposedly communicate with spirits.

They have a bad reputation even among seasoned occultists and mediums. If they do work, they have a tendency to be pretty indiscriminate about the entities they let in, or so I'm told.

Honestly, it is a matter of belief. I can't say they work or not. Some will say they do, some will say it's a matter of mind over matter. If you think it will work and want it to work, I have an odd feeling it may just work.

i do not think they work, but the only time i have ever tried is at a HUGE party and like 6 people had their hands on the little controller. then we asked the person who it was, and it spelled out my grandpa's name. so either the people i was playing with were fags, or the "spirits" it attracts arent evil, but just any spirits. c'mon, my grandpa rocked!

They work seemingly, but not the way people think they do. They do NOT give answers. Just mystify the ignorant. Think of them as toys ONLY.

ya they do but dont try them because only evil spirits answer. shouldnt mess with this stuff i heard some real bad stuff from people who've tried it. for instance with one of relatives who tried it the spirit comes back every year on the day and he has really bad luck on that day and throughout year but especially on that day. he cant get rid of the spirit its stuck in the room. may sound crazy but its true.
i cant stress how bad they are so please just stay away from them.
