European countries had coal. Coal was used as fuel, that caused lighting, steam trains and brought about better transportation. With better transportation brought more trade with other areas. Electricity and fuel meant more manufaturing better output.

The main factor,the common factor that industrialized all the world was the ability to harness steam. Steam has always been around. Unharnessed, steam is but a mere vapor rising from a pot of stew. Lingering haplessly into the atmosphere. But harnessed,steam becomes the most powerful force on earth.
Europe realized this along with all the other growing nations at that time. And realizing this,Europe needed to exploit more of its natural resources such as coal, wood, and any other natural fuels along with water to create steam.

Most attempts to become an empire have been based on acquisition of natural resources. The Japanese during World War II were seeking to take natural resources by force.
