If D Smith wanted a receipt for the transaction he would need to fill in his paying in book and give it to J Story to take to the bank and get it stamped.
The Bank would be very unlikely to give J Story a receipt with D Smiths account details on it.

Yes, if it's listed on back as For Deposit Only. They won't give you a receipt or anything showing balance of the account but will mail it to the account holder.

as long as J.Story has D.Smith's account details/paying-in book then yes they can pay it in....i take cheques in for my husband using his paying-in book on a regular basis and have no problems

not usually b/c the receipt will have the account number on it and banks don't want to give this information to non account holders

Yes, I do it for my sister who lives out of state all the time
I can never take money out of her account
As long as if I have her info I can make deposits

Anyone can deposit money in someone's name into an account with the same name. They can never withdraw it though.
