I mean if the bankers draft is made payable to D.Smith, can J.Story pay it in, at the account holders bank, without D.Smith being there?

Yes that would not be a problem.

If D Smith wanted a receipt for the transaction he would need to fill in his paying in book and give it to J Story to take to the bank and get it stamped.

The Bank would be very unlikely to give J Story a receipt with D Smiths account details on it.

Yes, if it's listed on back as For Deposit Only. They won't give you a receipt or anything showing balance of the account but will mail it to the account holder.

Anyone can deposit money in someone's name into an account with the same name. They can never withdraw it though.

Yes, indeed. If I were feeling particularly generous, I could pay monies into your account too! Won't get it out, though . . .
