This story is perhaps exaggerated, but...
Apparently Dickey's drug use was not working out with the new "clean" Gregg Allman. The relationship was so strained that they were not speaking, so the rumor is that Gregg fired Dickey via a fax. Tough end to a long relationship.
The latest Allman Bros stuff is great. They kept the other two gtr payers (Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks) and wrote new material that is fantastic. Go see them.
Dickey formed a new band, Great Southern, and I have read good reviews. They don't tour the northern US too often, so I haven't see them yet. I sure want to - Dickey is an amazing gtrist.
Kinda funnny that both Gregg and Dickey seem to have been inspired by their separation and are writing new stuff. Nice to see it happen. Not many artists at this stage can do that.

He now tours under the name Dickey Betts and Great Southern, which has recently added Dickey's son, Duane Betts, on lead guitar.

Dickie actually got kicked out of the Bros. for being TOO F***ED UP (if you can believe THAT!...but it's true)
He goes around solo with his own band doing smaller venues these days.
Kind of hard to imagine the Allman's without him...even more so than without Dwayne!

I don't think he is coming back.
I don't have any info that he is returning to the Allman Bros, just staying with Great Southern.
