The war was deemed unnecessary because the powers were not really fighting for anything. It was because of this that Wilson hesitated until his second term to join the war. The war began becan because of nationalism, militarism, and imperialism. With nationalism, all countries thought they were the best and wanted to prove it to other countries. With militarism, countries began building up their military, but had no one to fight. With imperialism, countries were striving to colonize more and more countries, but where stepping on other countries' territories. Competition, really. The war was not needed for any specific cause.

However, the US joined the war (April 2nd, 1917) because of the German's Unrestricted Submarine Warfare. They would sink any ship that sailed to England without issuing a warning. They sunk the Lusitania which was an Irish ship, however had 128 Americans on board. That, plus propaganda, pushed us into the war. Our excuse (president Wilson's, rather) was that we were fighting for democracy and to end dictatorship in Germany.

WWI was fought due to conflict between the new power - Germany - conflicting with the established order of the older powers - France and Britain.

It was a war over domination, colonies, and prestige - not deeper issues like ideology.

And the war solved almost nothing. The allies, most notably France, demanded harsh terms at the end of the war, only to refuse to enforce them when the Germans broke them a generation later on the way to again trying to dominate the continent.

If Russia and France mind their own business regarding Austria-Hungary and Serbia, than Germany would never have gotten involved which means that Germany wouldn't have had to carry out a pre-emptive attack on France through Belgium, which means England, and therefore the USA would never have gotten involved.

That's my personal take on world war one.
