The problem isn't really "America," and it certainly has nothing to do with 9/11. Felons have always had difficulties finding a job. The problem is human nature and statistics. You're in a tough spot, especially considering the nature of your crime. On the human nature side, people are naturally distrustful of others. Trust is a hard thing to earn, and you have a record of breaking trust. It is natural for a person to be suspicious, because they do not want something bad to happen to them.

Factor into this the statisitics: a high percentage of criminals repeat as criminals. It's a fact, and that fact makes you a high-risk investment.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying it is right. You've paid your debt to society, and providing that you are NOT a repeat offender, your rehabilitation likelihood may be high. But put yourself in an employer's shoes. You stole. That is proof that you have the capability to steal. In a business world that is bent on making money, that is a risk. If someone is available that has a clean record, they are going to be a more attractive job candidate. It is simple common sense, and has nothing to do with forgiveness.

There is other information afoot here as well. You do not provide us with your job qualifications. What can you do? What are your skills? Do you have an education? Have you tried to get one? There may be other reasons besides your record working against you. Where you live will have an impact. Your attitude will have an impact. What you may need to do is to educate yourself more. If you can go back to school, then that is a start. At the very least, get online and educate yourself on job-finding techniques that will help make yourself a more attractive employee in an interview.

Another possibility would be to try a temp agency. There are lots of entry level jobs in areas that are more willing than others to take a chance on an ex-con. Try applying to restaurants or hardware and grocery stores. You may have to start at the bottom and build up your resume before you can get something good. If you are on parole, talk to your parole officer for ideas. If not, you may be able to talk to the police station or a defense attorney for some suggestions.

Sorry I can't give you more specific information. I don't even know where you live, let alone what your qualifications are. That said, there ARE jobs out there for people with a criminal record. Every ex-con in the country is not unemployed. The problem is probably more situation-specific than you lead yourself to believe. But it is tough, that is for sure. I wish you the best of luck!

Plead for Mercy, with the help of your parents..In the words of Baretta: "Don't do the Crime, If you canm't do the time." Hopefully a real lesson has been learned.
