If people are fair and vigilant corruption can be contained if not eliminated.Without waiting for others to take the lead everyone must realise their duty to the country and should desist from giving bribe. We should not expect any undue or out of turn favour from anybody.
We must fight injustice or at least support those who fight for it without turning a blind eye.
These will at least control corruption.

Gifts were sent as token of appreciation and regards - this can be observed in all histories. This was a two way system wherein seniors and juniors both reciprocated in kind. Over the ages, the menatlity has changed. Now the senior (or individual who holds the upper hand) demands the appreciation and regard. They expect a physical representation of this. In official circles this is bribe or graft etc and in social circles - dowry.
It is amazing how people justify their act of comission and omission on flimsy grounds like one of the answers in response to this question - corruption funding somebody's studies - could this not have been achieved through bank loans like millions are doing??
It is not the proverbial case of one rotten apple spoiling the basket. Times have changed and today it is one good apple in a rotten basket.

Corruption is due to misuse of power, at both the taker and the giver. Giving money/thing to get things done, has to be considered unethical. Moreover, the government should provide ways and means to cater to genuine urgent requirements of people in a legal way and encourage staff who are uncorrupted. Until the govt. forms part of the corruption chain it can never be weeded out. Let us hope for the best to happen in our country.

Corruption is a disease in our country and to the level to which it has spread i think that it is not possibal to eradicate it completely. But if the people of india take a firm step all together against it then it can be removed to some extent. and i would like to say that the cause of this corruption is also we '"the people of INDIA". we give money then only they take it. we have to adopt very firm steps in order to stop it and it will take many many years to do this work so we need to be patient. And the biggest contributors to it are our POLITICIANS . when the leaders are like this then what we expect from the people.

You mean like insurance companys paid off politicians for this ridicoulis health insurance plan where we pay taxes if our employer provides it,or how insurance companys are being dragged into court for fraud by the Mississippi attorney general? or how hospitals charge twice as much to people without insurance than they do insurance companys for the same operation? Maybe your refering children that can't get health care but we're spending billions for this policeing fools in another country trying to kill each other as though we should care? Or the corruption of the oil companys holding us hostage by makeing billions each year and paying off people like bush, and Rice and all the other crooks in office.

When the vast majority of a country's wealth is in the hands of a few and the vast majority of it's people live in poverty, their government is certainly corrupt.

Lot of corruption is due to bad systems, bad laws and red tape etc. and also no deterrent. If one person is put in jail for 20 years for corruption it will deter a hundered others.
