I'm writing an e-book for startups and looking for those hints and tips that you wish someone had told you when you started out - it could be about anything to do wiht business - websites, marketing, sales, law, legislation, presenting, planning,m R&R - anything.

All contributors will be credited and promoted with the book, which will be given away for free.

I could write this on my own, but would like to use the opportunity to promote other small businesses at the same time, therefore creating a win-win situation. Doing it like this also means that others can give it away for free as it isn't just promoting one company.

Three tips I'd recommend are:
1) Solicit feedback, lots of it: Although many entrepreneurs worry about sharing their idea and having it stolen, I think the better approach is to share it with as many smart people as possible and take their feedback seriously. Entrepreneurs have more ideas than they can ever execute, but they lack multiple perspectives to maximize a single idea's value.
2) Focus, focus, focus: Many entrepreneurs get stuck in a cycle of great ideas/opportunities that spread their time/efforts too thinly. However, the best entrepreneurs work on quickly identifying the most important opportunities and focusing their energies there.
3) Just do it: A defining characteristic of great startups is that they don't let lack of capital, connections or people stand in the way of getting something done. Getting something off the ground isn't magic, but a process of putting one foot in front of the other that slowly garners believers, customers, funding and success.

First would probably be to focus. Get your dream right. Get your business right.

Then surround yourself with experts. Be prepared to fail. You're going to fail on average 9 times, before you are successful. Can you handle that? You won't if you don't have a strong enough dream.
