Myself and a few friends are going to Riga for St Patricks Day.

We have heard a few reports on TV that things are dangerous for tourists in the city and people are getting robbed and ripped off. Is it true or is it an exaggeration. How can we can stay safe and enjoy ourselves at the same time?

You are probably safer in riga than in any city in the UK. I've lived in the Baltics for 12 years and have never had a problem and I go to Riga regularly (It is only an hours drive).
What you have to watch out for are rip off lap dancing joints which do the same as in soho and charge you through the nose (source BBC).
Also. The Rigans are getting pissed off with drunken yobs so don't get too pished and control anyone getting obnoxious. Do not assume everyone is Latvian. The majority of Rigans are actually russian. Don't get over protective if someone comes over to talk. they probably just want to practice their English but be prepared to politely get rid of the English language groupies. Like anywhere avoid the bus station area and watch out for the beer and black balsam. It is lethal. ENJOY!!!

No it is not true ...Riga is no worse than any city in the UK...in fact i would feel safer there than in London,, Riga is the capital of Latvia and the Latvian people are the most honest hard working nicest people I have had the pleasure of knowing .....The only downside is that 50% of the population of Latvia are in fact Russians who lived there before Latvia gained it's Independence ..its the Russian folk who are likely to mug you not the Latvians

Yes, it can be dangerous in the Baltic states. There are many scams there. But keep your wits about you & you'll be fine.
