'I was thinking of the Carly Simon song- you're so vain you probably think this song is about you don't you! don't you!
The vainest people i have met have been totally self- absorbed and were showered with wonderful unrealistic affirmations when they were younger from everyone in their family about how intelligent they were how beautiful and so on; so they never had to work for that admiration, they got it for free. Moving into the real world was a big shock that they couldn't recover from. they didn t know how to cope and so just feel back on that internalised cushion of praise and made the world wrong.
maybe there are other reasons but I think that putting self higher than others and a lack of realism is always part of it.

Excessive vanity is a psychologically recognised disorder called Narcissism (NPD).
It usually manifests itself when people rather than being excessively vain begin to show a lack of empathy or regard for others.
Narcissism comes from the Greek and means 'self love'

They think that, when they walk into a room, they are the best-looking, or most intelligent, or most interesting person. They don't realize that 5 or more people in that room are more interesting looking, better read, have more wisdom, are more fun to be with, or are more interesting to be with. That is vanity.

I dont see been vain as a bad thing, if you dont love your self know one else will.
the one thing i do hate is when gorgeous skiny girls say oh god I look really ugly today, just because they know their not and they want you to say course your not ugly your gorgeous etc etc
Im vain and I love my self and I think im gorgeous (not everyone will share my opinion) but I couldnt imanine living if I hated my self and the way I looked be happy and love your self thats what I say. xx
