I was thinking about starting my son on some cerial. Hes 3 months on the 26th. I just dont want my doc to know I started him early when I take him there. His next apointment is March 9th and the doc said we would talk about a new diet then. Should I just wait and see what the doc has to say or should I sneek some solids into this hungry boy of mine?

I would wait...I know you want to give him cereal early but it's not a good idea. There is a reason they say wait until four months before giving a baby cereal. Before then, there is a much higher risk of developing food allergies. Your doctor is telling you to wait FOR A REASON. He can also help you decide which cereal to give him, how much, etc...He can also tell you when to start on fruits and vegetables. Then meats. Wheat cereal and cow's milk are not started until he is a year old. Their stomach can not digest cow's milk properly and wheat cereal is because of allergies. If your doctor thought you could start him early, he would tell you so. I'd wait. I know he's eating all the time now but he's also a growing boy. Remember that. Your baby is growing very rapidly at the age. He will slow down soon. I promise.

I would wait until the doctor says that your son is ready. Feeding cereal early has led to some digestive issues later on and it's just not worth the risk. Babies also have that thrust reflex that usually doesn't go away until they are 4 months or later. Despite what some may say - babies don't need solid food at this age - they are getting everything they need from breastmilk or formula.

Why is it that you want to give your child solids so early? The reason doctors tell you that you need to wait is because first, babies mouths don't really know how to eat food before at least 4 months and second, introducing foods too early can create allergies to the foods. I personally waited until my kids were 6 months, they were able to eat the food better and lowered the risk of allergies.

In the end, it's your child, not the pediatricians and you need to do what's best for him.

Your doctor is there to advise you on the health of your child. Don't be scared about being honest with him about what you're doing or planning to do - it will work best for your son's health if the two of you are honest with each other.

Many doctors prefer that you wait 4 or even 6 months before givign solids to a baby. My daughter was ready before 4 months - you know. She would start leaning forward and swatting at my food, knocking my fork/spoon out of my hand and all the while her mouth was hanging open. She was definitely ready. So I let me doctor know that I was going to give her cereal periodically when we went to her 3 month appointment. My doctor just advised me NOT to put the cereal in her bottle.

Honesty is the best policy - there's nothing to hide. You both have your son's health at interest.

baby's do not need any extra food. Starting them too early will only result in an upset stomach or possibly food allergies. i didn't feed my boys anything until they could sit up by themselves in a highchair. It's no fun trying to hold them and feed them. Keep them on breast milk or formula for as long as you can, it's easy and cheap, and the best for your baby.

Feeding early is really really outdated information. He has his whole life to eat solids.. but right now he really needs those extra nutrients from breastmilk (or formula) to grow not only his body but his BRAIN. Giving him empty (or small) calories from solids only deprives his body of what he really needs. Plus why risk damaging his body if you introduce too early? (allergies, intestinal pain). Why the rush?

But to answer your question unfortunately I highly doubt your doctor will be able to tell (unless of course it creates a medical problem).

You know, the doctor will only find out when there's an allergy. If you feed your child quite a few foods "too early", chances are he will be one of the kids who can't have the class cupcakes for his own birthday party, you know?

I would wait until 6 months to start solid foods - baby's digestive system is not fully able to handle solids until then and you are risking a higher chance of food allergies and/or other GI problems.

Truthfully your doctor will have no idea what you are giving him...he only knows what you tell him. It is ultimately your decision on what you give him. Most people will say that their digestive tracts are not mature enough to handle it yet but my mom fed all three of her babies cereal before a month old(and there is nothing wrong with us) and I did as well with my 3 children.

Go with what you think is right, usually babies are very interested in what others eat around them before they are six months old and I don't think milk, specially breast milk... THE BEST, will keep him satisfied.

I am a normal weight person and I was fed babanas, eggs, mango, cereal, and other soft foods way before 6 months, it was the way it was done before... and before you didn't have so many overweight, hipersensitive, alergic to everything kids... ask any grandma!!
