First of all, I just learned an interesting fact. Do you know that over 70% of Quebeckers that are still francophones can trace one of their ancestors back to a fille de roi?

Anyways, first of all you need to know their background. They are basically orphans and such that have been adopted by the government and raised to attract french men to New France to settle. On the boat ride over they were subject to disease, shipwreak possibilities, etc for over SIX weeks!

Once they landed they were greeted quickly and often married within a year. Only two of the fille de roi went back to England. Also, these women had a lot of rights because if they divorced (and trust me, they did!) they never had a shortage of men to marry. On top of this, they were treated really well (in comparison to most) by their men because they were in such high demand all the time.

Their basic function was to have children so that a colony could begin to be established in New France so the British wouldn't take over.
