I'm not American and maybe I need to be in order to understand it so will you all help me out on this. Oprah opens up a school in one of the poorest nations on earth and she gets bashed for it? What is wrong with this picture? Please enlighten me. I would surely appreciate it. I am trying real hard to leave ethnicity out of this but it's the only thing that's coming to mind.

I can see why you don't understand why Oprah is getting bashed for opening a school in Africa. I am an American, and this is what I think. First of all, you must understand that the bashing comes from only a very few people in America. Whenever you read something about America, ask yourself "how many Americans really believe this way?" It doesn't matter where a person chooses to be kind or do good for others, it only matters that they do. Oprah has a deep love for Africa, not only because she is from African heritage, but because she has visited there so many times and has seen its poverty first hand. Many Americans (not most, not all) have not traveled and have no idea about the poverty in the rest of the world. And you are right about keeping ethnicity out of this. The few bashers are both white and black. Unfortunately, since there is a huge number of American blacks who are in poverty, they would like to see someone like Oprah building schools for their own children. Poverty is a very complex thing and sometimes people can't understand why goodness and kindness doesn't start at home. But I am sure, Oprah has done wonderful things in America too. She is beloved by millions of Americans, both black and white, and Latino. I know for a fact that many Americans admire her for building the school in Africa, especially for young women and girls, who endure extreme abuse and discrimination from their own fathers and husbands, people who should be protecting them. Good for you for trying to look deeper into the news. Noel

I think it is completely ridiculous that everyone is bashing Oprah for opening her African school. If those in disagreement have paid any attention at all, they would notice that she has shed a great deal of light on the horrible conditions in some of our own American schools. You never know the places she has contributed to, out of the public eye. Whether it was in America, or Africa, she did a great thing. She she be applauded for what she did either way.

many of these answers are very good and are true... but here is an interesting piece of the issue (I read this somewhere): when Oprah was asked why she opened the school in Africa and not in the US, she said something like "when I asked children in America what they really wanted, they told her things like Ipods, CD's, etc. But when she asked the children in Africa what they really wanted, they said a safe place to go to school." So, she built a school, supplied uniforms and books, etc. Oprah should be praised for her actions.

I bash her for it because of the fact that spending all that money IN ANOTHER COUNTRY!!!..... Why spend that much money in another country when she should be spending it right here in HER OWN COUNTRY!!!???.... This kind of thing is exactly why the entire world thinks that USA is a RICH country with no problems, because people that have money spend their money in other countries when they should be worried about our children here in the USA!! I say you should "spend it, where you made it"... Oprah or no one else for that matter made their fortunes in Africa or any other 3rd world country... Don't get me wrong I feel terrible about their plight but I feel just as terrible when I go to my local Walmart and see poor children with poor families who I know will not recieve a decent education and the cycle will just continue with their offspring.. If I was rich, I would be helping my own children first!!!

And have you seen this school?!!? Marble everywhere???... I mean I'm part Native American and Italian.. when I get rich I'm going to Italy to help all of the poor people over there... but wait.. I'll stop in at the local childrens home first and hand out a couple of teddy bears.. that oughta help..... puuleeaaase!!!

Oprah's a hypocrite. She denied kids in the U.S. this school because she said they wanted CD's etc. and who gives away more useless junk to her audience than Oprah. Perfume, expensive handbags, makeup that costs a fortune. She's got countless homes and billions of dollars and she's berating kids for wanting CDs.

The Oprah "bashers" are probably upset because she didn't open a school in one of the poorer cities in the US.

They're mad she didn't open the school in the U.S. and they're mad it's only for girls. Also all the publicity, they think charity shouldn't be announced. It's not ethnicity, it's just that she's richer than God and everyone has an idea on how to spend her money.

She is a good person with a heart of gold and she uses her wealth to help poor people. I find nothing wrong with that.
