Well, you should at least have some idea of how it's spelled. Look through until you find a word that sounds like the word you need, and look at the definition, and if that matches, then you got your word!

Yes when I was younger I've had that to happen before. I never understood it either. Both my parents are teachers. When I asked them they never told me to look it up. They stopped and took the time to spell it out for me..

it is different from he does not already comprehend that observe, top? What difference does it make if he can or can not spell it? If his lists are like those my youngsters have been given in 1st grade, they have a number of those rhymes -- are words like will, pill, mill, fill and relax on there?

In college if we (students) used interesting words, we had a prof who would stop class and demand we spell it on the spot for him. What a jackass.
But now i can spell facetious and all sorts of stuff.
