I don't like Rap music either, and to tell you the truth, I get the same response.
It just isn't something that I enjoy listening to or really can understand.
It is really the only type of music that I do not have in my very large CD collection.
I guess people just think that it is so popular that everyone must like it.

I like rap, just not gangsta or most mainstream rap. I listen to rappers who actually have talent and rap about something, such as OutKast (especially pre-Hey Ya), Common, Lupe Fiasco, and Kanye West. I get the same expression when I say that I don't listen to garbage like Jim Jones, Snoop Dogg, and 50 Cent. They say, "Come on! It's some awesome music!" Well, it's not, unless you like rappers that brag about how they have drugs and money. So you (the asker) are listening to good music and shouldn't care what people think. You're being yourself, not a product of society. If only more people would be like that...

I know the feeling. During High School as mainstream Rap music's quality & relevence to me in my life started to wane, I disassociated myself from it because I see that particular kind of Rap music is either hateful to one myself, women and/or gay men. It also tends to give teens/20-somethings a warped view of the world and themselves. And people think why are music sales on a steady decline?
It is because more and more people realize that is kind of music serves you no good at the end of the day. There is good Rap music outhere, but underground rap, Foreign Rap, and Alternative Rap doesn't get the same shine even though overall it is much better than the now waning Gangsta Rap. That is just psuedo-dance music and in no way is relective of what true Electronic/Dance genre music is!
I only like those because they sound so different. Styles like Foreign Rap and Euro-Rap, favours Eurodance/Hi-NRG/Dance-pop music. So, it would sound something like music from 2 Unlimited, Culture Beat, Dr. Alban and Freedom Williams. It is also devoid of any vulgar language and negative connotations. It is cool to know Rap music that is good and nothing like what we have to put up with here in the States. Like most at that age, they want to fit in so badly, they often start losing their or hiding their true self. They conform to whatever media says they should.
Futhermore, few of them have the patience to explore the vast world of secular music, so they take what Television programs and commericial radio says they should like. That is called being a follower. Anyway, harshly ignore them, for you are an individual who knows what kinds of music can uplift you and make you feel better about yourself and what can rip your healthy self image and confidence apart because you are not what the status quo is. Be someone with amibition, don't be a follower of music nothingness. It seems like more people want a Gangsta Rap Backlash to happen to rid us of this. I don't blame you. You can find some cool music artists at these website below. Peace.

Why not give it a try?
I like to think that I like good examples from all genres, i.e. I like some rap, some heavy metal, some pop, some classical, some country, some blues, etc. etc. (although with a better tolerance of "not so good" examples from some genres than others).
Say to these people that you haven't liked the rap that you've heard, what do they think you'd like better? And then try it out, you never know.

Personally I find that rap is an intregal part of urban culture. The success of it being transported to suburban culture is due to the success of making it look cool.
If you don't like rap and find it difficult to communicate the information to peers I'd recomend to do a pro / con sheet for rap and for the music you like. Then look to your own surroundings and articulate also what you like / dislike.
perhaps the strongest reason people find it strange is because for them everybody the know likes it ..... ie the cultural component.

because when you're into something and surrounded by people who are too, you get insulated. it's no different than meeting someone new and assuming they're the same religion or have the same political views as you. they would feel the same way if they were dropped into another music scene. that same thing has happened to me a bunch of times with punk ... I can hang out with punks no problem but when it comes to the music, it's like 'you just haven't heard good punk' or 'you just haven't been to a show and experienced it' ... why can't it just be that I don't like the music?

i'd never got into rap, rap= retards attempting poetry. Talking of rap, the frst thing comes on my minds is about bullet proof homies who couldnt sing but they have guns so they threatened the producers of recording label to make an album for them or else they'll kill the producers..... Gangstar, trying to be agianst the law. If they are so brave and against the law why dont they enlist themselves to be troops in Iraq or go to muslim hotbeds of Pakistan or indonesia with their guns, will the homies have the balls to kill the locals?

Rap isn't song. It lacks melody and team spirit that are a maximum in song definition. Its no longer poetry the two (Shakespeare is poetry). Its shouted rhymes with a repeating common improve as rhythm and a few annoying synth effect, now and lower back. in case you prefer to take heed to authentic song which you will possibly routinely dislike, attempt classical, jazz, funky or annoying rock. a number of my unusual likes may be: a million- secret by way of Michael Jackson 2- Shining famous individual by way of Earth Wind & fireplace. 3- FU (forget approximately you) by way of Cee Lo eco-friendly

It's because you probably like good music. I like rap, just obscure stuff nobodys ever heard of. Rap turned into a bunch of blacks who wear horrible gaudy clothes and think it's ok to sound stupid when you talk. If it's not revolutionary rap, it's garbage. And don't listen to christian rap, it can't be good.

Congrats to you for being your own person and having the conviction to resist the pull of conventional popularity. I dislike rap also and think the acronym really could stand for Retards Attempting Poetry. Trust your instincts and follow them. They will lead you to what is really talented and pleasing to the soul.
