The best way to handle them is to see them for exactly who they are-insecure and shallow. Don't take them too seriously and realize that this is the only way they have to deal with their sorry, fragile egos.

It's often tempting not to tell of pretentious jerks. But it only sets you up for further aggravation. Most of these jerks don't understand that they're jerks and will justify their actions, which will, in turn, either make you look like the bad guy or make you even angrier. Or both.

No, I have found the best way of dealing with pretentious jerks is to ignore them. If you have to deal with them on a regular basis, develop a quick wit and upstage them. Most of them won't even recognize when they're being insulted if it's done tongue in cheek.

If you know you will encouter them, try the following for the best results:

Prepare yourself beforehand. Know this person will act accordingly. KNOW that it WILL NOT bother you. Take deep breaths, slowly in and exhale slowly as well. Do the breathing until you feel calm and in control. Tell yourself that this person's attitude will not change the calm and peaceful state in which you dwell, and that you will smile and be gracious in the face of the persons actions/words.

You will experience some anxiety when first approaching, but breathe and remember how you will handle this situation.

If long periods of time must be endured with this person, then preparing a verbal response (and practicing it in calm, concise manner) will help to dissuade the individual from persisting in their pompous attitudes towards you. A verbal resonse such as, "I realize you have experience in this area, however I would rather learn this subject from the instructor." Use pleasant tone and walk away from the situation in a calm and unassuming way. Best to you dear...
