Planned obsolescence is the conscious decision on the part of an agency to produce a consumer product that will become obsolete and/or non-functional in a defined time frame.
This basically means that products have a lifespan so that the industry doesn't dry up. So if everyone buys a washing machine that works forever then then the washing machine industry ends up down the pan (theoretically).
I have heard that Sony produce the lasers in their PlayStation's to die after a certain period of time so that there is more incentive to buy the newer version. I don't know how old your PlayStation is but this maybe why this is happening.

get rid of the precise case of the PS2. Unscrew the sq. plate this is protecting the disc force (it is the element that asserts `warning: do not get rid of`). Use a cotton swab to wipe off the laser with a severe concentration isopropyl alcohol answer (~70%). you would be able to gently rinse the laser with a cotton swab dipped in water afterwards. enable the laser air dry earlier finding out the unit. EDIT: you would be able to additionally could desire to decrease or advance the laser. you ought to use the white colored cog in the back of the disc tray to try this. EDIT2: If neither of those ideas artwork, you may get sort new lasers for the PS2. that's an straight forward alternative as long as you do not lose any of the screws (like me).

Do you try putting different disc rather than just one? And maybe it's the problem of the lens... A dirty lens is not the only problem.. Maybe the lens is spoiled.. But if you're going to change your lens.. I'll suggest you buy a new ps2 because the price is almost the same

Hi,
PS2 has a device in it which reads the "range" of the discs entered into it. if, and only if, your machine is out of warranty then i advise you to look on ebay and find someone selling the instructions on how to adjust the range on your machine. its a simple turn of a screw inside but it was a long time ago that i done it and cant quite remember how its done but the info is defo available on ebay. PS2 have a habit of falling out of range and is a common problem but DONT open it up if your still under warranty. not teaching you to suck eggs but dont want to screw up your warranty if you have one! good luck!

it happened to me and this is how you fix it. you first need tiny screwdrivers. like eyeglass screwdrivers. on the bottom of the playstation there are plastic circles, remove them and you will see that they are covering screws. i think there are 8. take them out and the playstation opens like a book. then there is a cover over the lens part. there should be 4 little screws holding it on. take them off, exposing the reading lens. now take a qtip with rubbing alcohol on it and wipe the lens. now put it back together. i did this to my playstation 3 years ago and its been fine ever since. good luck

Sounds like you damaged your laser possibly if your under warrenty take it in to get it fixed/replaced, If the disk are old and scratched most likly thats your prob but if they are new disks then it sounds like your laser was broke. Shaking it didn't help nothing either probably made it worse lol

The laser needs to be replaced. IT is a fairly easy operation and you can get the laser assemblies off of ebay.

Take it apart. Thats what i did with my ps2 and it works fine. YOu could call game stores and electronic stores and aske if they could fix it for you. so call your local EBGames or Gamestop or Gamecrazy or Best Buy or Circuit City.
