As a meteorologist who spent many years in the study of tropical storms I am pleased that each of the above contributors to your question have answered well. Indeed there is no such word as hurricanologist. The scientific discipline of meteorology includes the study of all time and spatial scales of weather from what is referred to as micro-meteorology to that of the planetary scale.

I like "cyclonographer" and it is similar to "oceanographer" which would be a good buddy for one.

A cyclonographer could study typhoons, hurricanes or cyclones. Hurricanologist would have to be subspecialty of cyclonographer.

I think Ouragan from which hurricane comes was a West Indian word, maybe the name of the Storm God, which found its way into French and the Louisiana area. Later it may have had a role in the name for Oregon.

But currently, most cyclonographers [hurricanologists] probably call themselves meteorologists. The latter title also broadens your prospects for getting a job during tough times.

I think those people who fly out in planes to make measurements and drop probes are called Storm Chasers. If not, googling that may bring up a better or more current name.

I am a climatologist, my interests include hurricanes. There will be some dreadfull, large typhoons and cyclones in the near years. The hurricanes will be bad too, but thankfully, not so ferocious as the typhoons and cyclones.

Google Max Mayfield, I think he was the head of the Hurricane Warning Center, you may find out more.

'hurricanologist' is a made up word. Probably used by someone to give themselves a bit of credence.

To talk authoritatively about Hurricanes you need to be a Meteorologist. This is a recognised science and you have to go to university and pass tests before you are allowed to describe yourself as one.
